Un’inchiesta pubblicata sul Journal of Public Health Policy ha rivelato che Coca-Cola avrebbe speso milioni di dollari per finanziare ricerche scientifiche universitarie, bloccando o condizionando quelle che sono giunte a conclusioni sfavorevoli alla compagnia. Nell’articolo si spiega come Coca-cola usi i contratti e gli accordi per influenzare le ricerche sanitarie che finanzia. In base a quanto emerso la multinazionale utilizzerebbe contratti redatti minuziosamente per garantire che la società abbia un accesso privilegiato e anticipato ai risultati delle ricerche e possa chiudere gli studi per qualsiasi ragione. I ricercatori intervistati hanno dichiarato di aver dato alla Coca-cola la possibilità di far passare sotto silenzio i risultati sfavorevoli alla società, come ad esempio gli studi che collegano il consumo di bevande dolcificate all’obesità.

Gli autori dello studio sono collegati all‘Università di Cambridge, alla London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, alla Bocconi, e alla ong americana Right to Know. Il report su Coca-cola si basa sui contratti di ricerca ottenuti attraverso diverse richieste fatte con il Freedom of Information, e sono state prese in esame 87.000 pagine di documenti.
