Golf Prepares for Final Round

Olivia Cason led the Cards in their second day of action in the NCAA Regional. The senior finished with an even par-72 on the day.

The Cards, unfortunately, sit way back in 14th place with a score of 609 (305 + 304). Kent State sits atop the Regional all alone with a score of 573. With just one day of action remaining Louisville will need to rally hard and hope for a little bit of help from their competition.

Lauren Hartlage is in 38th overall with a score of 150 and Margot Bechadergue sits two strokes back.

ACC Tournament Begins

Louisville was fortunate to be seeded high enough to have a bye during the first round of the ACC Tournament.  The 5th-seeded Cards don’t play until Thursday but they did arrive safely in Tallahassee yesterday.

The Cards will play the 4-seed in the tournament, North Carolina.  The winner will most likely play 1-seed Virginia Tech, unless the Hokies do the Hokey Chokey in their first game of the tournament.

Louisville is in a slump having lost three straight and five of their last six. Pitching hasn’t been stellar and the bats have gone silent when needed most.

Celene Funke is top in the conference in triples and Sidney Melton is second in stolen bases. Danielle Watson sits high on strikeouts and innings pitched and Taylor Roby is Top 5 in saves.

Where the Cards have had weakness on the season would be the fielding errors and leaving runners on base. In order to make a run in the tournament those two issues will need to be addressed.

It appears the Cards are a sure-in for the NCAA Tournament where they are projected to be a 2-seed or 3-seed in a regional. I’m not quite convinced unless they can win at least one game in the conference tournament.

ACC Honors

Melton was named to the all-ACC second team while Rebecca Chung and Charley Butler were named to the freshmen team.

Melton has had a spectacular senior season on offense where she leads the team in his, batting average, and stolen bases.

Chung has spent her time behind the plate gunning down runners attempting to steal. She has had success at the plate with a few home runs and clutch hits in big games.

Butler has suffered a injury that has sidelined the speedster indefinitely, but she made an impact in left field with multiple SportsCenter Top 10 catches. She also relied on her quickness to be a threat on the base path.

I think Funke got snubbed from the honors and I believe Megan Hensley also deserved a shout out.

Happy Wednesday and Go Cards!
