Marta, Charlie e altri macachisono rinchiusi nelle gabbie di uno stabulario, presso un’importante università italiana. Questi non sono i loro veri nomi, che abbiamo deciso di non divulgare così come non divulgheremo il nome dell’università e di chi ci ha lavorato alcune settimane, con lo scopo di documentare e rendere visibile la loro triste vita.
Questi macachi vivono in piccole gabbie spoglie. Inseriti nel cranio e nelle tempie hanno degli elettrodi, necessari per gli esperimenti di neuroscienze a cui sono sottoposti. Una vita di totali privazioni porta molti di loro a comportamenti stereotipati: si muovono avanti e indietro nella gabbia, leccano compulsivamente le pareti e mordono senza sosta lucchetti e sbarre. Immagini come queste lasciano il segno. Non accade spesso di poter vedere video dall’interno dei laboratori di ricerca. Questa è la prima indagine compiuta “sotto copertura” in Italia, mentre le più recenti in Europa sono di cinque o sei anni fa, che diffondiamo oggi in occasione del 40esimo anniversario della Giornata mondiale per gli animali nei laboratori.

Il loro sguardo impotente tocca il cuore e non può lasciarci indifferenti. La domanda che questi animali sembrano porci è “davvero non possiamo fare in modo che questo non sia più necessario?”.
Nel nostro Paese sono circa 600 i laboratori autorizzati dal ministero della Salute a compiere esperimenti su animali. Si tratta di centri di ricerca pubblici o privati, situati all’interno di aziende farmaceutiche, università e ospedali. Il dato positivo è che anno dopo anno il numero totale di animali utilizzati per la ricerca scientifica è in graduale diminuzione: oggi sono poco meno di 600mila, mentre soltanto dieci anni fa erano quasi un milione.
