Vicino a Nanchino, in Cina, si trova l’antica cava di pietra di Yangshan, utilizzata per diversi secoli come fonte di pietra per edifici e monumenti, e famosa soprattutto per la gigantesca stele non finita ed abbandonata durante il regno dell’Imperatore Yongle all’inizio del XV secolo.
L’incredibile progetto di estrazione della stele, viene paragonato ad altri progetti di lavori pubblici dell’era Yongle, che includevano il lancio della Flotta del Tesoro per le spedizioni del grande navigatore cinese Zheng He, o la costruzione della Città Proibita a Pechino.
L’Imperatore Yongle, ordinò il taglio di una gigantesca stele, che sarebbe stata destinata al Mausoleo di Ming Xiaoling del suo defunto padre. Secondo il consueto disegno di una stele commemorativa cinese, venivano tagliati tre pezzi separati: la base della stele rettangolare (piedistallo), il “corpo” stele e la “testa” della stele (corona).
