According to MSNBC News:
One person is dead in the California synagogue shooting, and a rabbi was shot in the hand, the Mayor of Poway Steve Vaus said on MSNBC. The Mayor also said members of the congregation engaged the gunman to prevent further violence. "I can tell you that it was a hate crime, and that will not stand. This community will come together," he said.
San Diego County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a shooting at a synagogue that left one person dead in Poway on Saturday afternoon.
Poway Mayor Steve Vaus confirmed one person was killed in the shooting. The deceased is described as an adult female; no further information was immediately provided.
The incident was reported at the Chabad of Poway located at 16934 Chabad Way sometime before 11:30 a.m., San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said.
The suspect, who multiple sources identified as 19-year-old John Earnest, was arrested, Gore said.
One witness told 10 News that he heard three shots then dropped to the floor for cover. He said he heard a total of 15 shots and that the shooting lasted between 20-30 seconds.
Gore said the gunman used an AR-type assault weapon.
