Durante quella storica giornata il fondatore dello stesso sistema, Tim Berners-Lee, lo descrisse e presentò ai suoi capi al ERN di Ginevra. In seguito, la nuova tecnologia si diffuse gradualmente e nacquero i primissimi siti web.
Come recentemente è stato ricordato in una puntata di TGR Leonardo, il web italiano sorse ufficialmente nel 1993 in Sardegna. Andando maggiormente nei particolari, il primo sito web fu creato a Pula per volere del fisico Pietro Zanarini.
Tale sito web era (ed è) quello del 'CRS4', ovvero il Centro di ricerca, sviluppo e studi superiori in Sardegna. Come riportato in un articolo di qualche anno fa pubblicato su Repubblica, nel 1989 Zanarini era collega di building di Tim Berners Lee e la fondazione del centro di ricerca nacque dall'idea di alcuni esponenti della Regione Sardegna.
