Last-minute announcements by Rheinmetall and BAE Systems bring to four the number of confirmed contenders seeking to supply the Australian Army with up to 450 modern infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).

The contenders for the AUD10–15 billion (USD7–10.5 billion) Land 400 Phase 3 project comprise Rheinmetall Defence’s Lynx IFV, General Dynamics Land Systems’ (GDLS’) Ajax armoured fighting vehicle, Hanwha Group’s AS21 Redback IFV, and BAE Systems’ CV90 IFV. All four vehicles are tracked.

The IFV selected by Australia will replace obsolescent M113AS4 armoured personnel carriers (APCs), which, although upgraded in recent years, date from the mid-1960s.
