Con lui ci sarebbe anche il reporter John Cantlie e altri due ostaggi occidentali, rapiti alcuni anni fa in Siria. I jihadisti dello Stato islamico vorrebbero usarlo come moneta di scambio per cercare un accordo con le forze curde che li circondano e trovare un accordo per ritirarsi senza correre ulteriori rischi.
Non è la prima volta che giungono notizie positive sul sacerdote italiano. Già nel 2014, fonti mediorientali accendevano la speranza sulla sua sorte.
Chi è padre dall'Oglio
Padre Paolo, 62 anni, era stato rapito il 29 luglio del 2013, mentre si trovava a Raqqa, all'epoca la capitale dello Stato islamico. Nessuno ha mai rivendicato il suo rapimento: né l'Isis né i gruppi jihadisti. Per un breve periodo si pensò addirittura che il sacerdote fosse prigioniero in un carcere del Califfato nella provincia di Aleppo, come riportato da AdnKronos international. Dall'Oglio ha passato gran parte della sua vita in Siriaa, a Dei Mar Musa, dove guidava una comunità monastica dedita al dialogo religioso.
Con lo scoppio della rivoluzione nel 2011, padre Paolo si schierò dalla parte dei ribelli e per questo venne duramente accusato dal governo di Bashar al Assad. Il sacerdote si diresse così nel Kurdistan iracheno per poi rientrare in Siria ed essere infine rapito.
Chi è John Cantlie
È uno dei pochi superstiti della furia dello Stato islamico. Cantlie era arrivato in Siria per raccontare il conflitto insieme a James Foley, che venne poi brutalmente decapitato da Jihadi John nell'agosto del 2014.
Per rimanere vivo, il reporter si è prestato al Califfato, realizzando diversi video in cui incensava il modello dello Stato islamico e accusava la politica dell'Occidente in Medio Oriente. L'ultimo filmato risale al 2016 e Cantlie si trovava a Mosul, in Iraq. Ora si troverebbe in Siria, in una piccola fetta di terra controllata dalle bandiere nere al confine con l'Iraq. Proprio negli ultimi mesi, in questa zona si è registrata un'imponente avanzata dei curdi, appoggiati dall'aviazione e dall'artiglieria americana.
