LOUISVILLE WOMEN'S TENNIS 7-0 AFTER WEEKEND

There is one undefeated squad on campus in the spring sports that have gotten underway and they reside in the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. 

Mark Beckham's "serve and volley crew" went to 7-0 over the weekend with wins at Charleston Southern and Furman. The Saturday match against the Buccaneers in Charleston, SC was a sweep for the Cards 7-0. All six singles players won their matches, the "W"s going to, in seed order, Ola "Grandma" Mally, Raven Neely, Nikolina Jovic, Chloe Hamlin, Diana Wong and Dina Chaika. In doubles action, UofL picked up two of the three matches to win the doubles point in the contest.


Sunday kept the Cards in South Carolina and Louisville took to the court to face Furman. This one proved to be considerably tougher, UofL earning a hard-fought 4-3 win over the Paladins. 

And, just what is a Paladin..you might ask? Out of the court of Charlemagne in France came a foremost class of warriors that were known as the "Paladins". They were superb fighters and  trusted military leaders who championed their cause. 

The collegiate version of the Paladins lived up to that title against the Cards yesterday. Furman swept doubles competition to pick up a point and won two singles matches to force a tie at 3-3 with the Cards #6 seed Diana Wong yet to play. She pulled out a three set win (5-7, 6-1, 6-4) to gain the UofL fourth point and the match. In the other singles events, Ola took a loss, along with Chloe...Raven, Sena Suswam and Nikolina got wins.

The squad returns home for a few days before departing for a Friday, Feb 8th. match against Marshall. 


SIX CARDS NAMED TO FIELD-HOCKEY ALL-ACC ACADEMIC TEAM.

A nice achievement for Alli Bitting, Erica Cooper, Meche Pastor, Taylor Stone, Bethany Russ and Katie Walsh in being named to the 2018 All-ACC Academic squad. 

3.0 for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative GPA is the standard to be named to this squad, and the "Stick Girls" did it with one freshman (Cooper), three sophomores (Pastor, Russ and Bitting) and two seniors (Walsh and Stone). 

Louisvvlle finished the fall 2018 season 13-6 and ranked #14 in the polls. For 2019, the Cards lose four significant players on the squad in Ayeshia McFerran, Stone, Walsh and Maria Gomez...but return eight starters and four of their five top scorers. 

Justine Sowry has been the Cards FH skipper for seven years and accumulated 107 wins. 


DOWN GOES THE PACK ! ACC WBB SUNDAY NEWS AND NOTES

Another tricky day in Atlantic Coast Conference with previously undefeated NC State falling to North Carolina 64-51 on Jim Valvano Court in Raleigh, NC's Carmichael Arena. 

The Wolfpack never seemed to be able to get it to together for head coach Wes Moore and North Carolina bounced back from a one-point halftime deficit to rule the second half. Sylvia Hatchell's talented trip of Paris Key, Stephanie Watts and Janelle Bailey combined for 53 points and 25 rebounds. For State, Kiara Leslie had 17 in a losing effort. 

The loss tosses "the Pack" into a three-way tie for the ACC WBB top spot with Louisville and Notre Dame at 8-1 in conference. 

-- #5 Notre Dame had no trouble with home-standing Georgia Tech, swatting the Yellow Jackets 90-50.

-- FSU protected their #24 national ranking with a 85-61 raking of Wake Forest 
in Tallahassee. Another one that was basically over at the half. Kiah Gillespie coming strong with the offense for the "Noles with 22 points. FSU improves to 7-2 in ACC play. 

-- Va. Tech kept up with the recent winning ways while getting 30 points out of Regan Magarity in the 95-86 win at Boston College. The Hokies have won their last two after an 0-6 conference start and Boston College falls to 3-5 in the ACC. 

-- Miami improved to a 7-2 ACC record with a 72-59 win over visiting Virginia. The 'Canes" got 24 from Beatrice Mompreimer, led by 12 at the half and maintained. The Cavs are 2-7 in conference and have lost five out of their last six against ACC foes. 

-- Duke did it in Durham downing Pitt 74-55. Haley Gorecki had 16 for the Devils, who are now 2-7 in conference action. Pitt is still 0 for ACC. 

Syracuse was on the bye week and heads to Louisville Thursday.
