After months of protest, the e-commerce giant confirmed that it’s pulling out of the deal.
Amazon is reportedly canceling its plan to build a corporate campus in New York City. The news, first reported by the New York Times, comes less than a week after reports began surfacing that the e-commerce giant was considering pulling out of the deal.
“After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens,” an Amazon spokesperson told the Times. “For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long-term. While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.”
Amazon’s Long Island City campus would have been half of its so-called “second headquarters,” or HQ2, and would have brought 25,000 jobs to the city. But from the moment the deal was announced, locals and lawmakers opposed the way it had been negotiated and the fact that the city and state governments were giving Amazon more than $3 billion in subsidies. The other half of HQ2 is still slated to open in Crystal City, Virginia. Amazon does not plan on finding a new host city to replace New York, a spokesperson told the Times.
