Il ministero degli Esteri italiano ha confermato che Giovanni Francesco Asperti, un italiano 50enne originario di Bergamo, è morto in Siria, dove si trovava dopo essersi unito volontariamente ai curdi per combattere lo Stato Islamico (o ISIS). La notizia della sua morte era stata data inizialmente da un comunicato diffuso dagli stessi curdi, che diceva che Asperti «è rimasto martirizzato in uno sfortunato incidente il 7 dicembre 2018 a Derik», nella punta nord orientale della Siria.
