Armata Rossa arrivarono nei pressi della città polacca di Auschwitz (Oświęcim in polacco)
scoprendo l’enorme campo di concentramento e sterminio utilizzato nel corso del genocidio nazista: verso mezzogiorno, le prime truppe sovietiche del generale Viktor Kurockin entrarono ad Auschwitz e trovarono circa 7.000 prigionieri che erano stati lasciati nel campo. Molti erano bambini e una cinquantina di loro aveva meno di otto anni. Erano sopravvissuti perché erano stati usati come cavie per la ricerca medica.
Il 27 gennaio del 1945 finì ufficialmente il più grande omicidio di massa della storia avvenuto in un unico luogo:
è stato calcolato che ad Auschwitz morirono più persone che in qualsiasi altro campo di concentramento nazista.
