Il ministro della Difesa, Elisabetta Trenta, ha dato mandato allo stato maggiore di pianificare il rientro dall’Afghanistan e perciò fare tutti i passi necessari presso gli alleati dell’Alleanza atlantica affinché il nostro rientro sia coordinato con quello degli altri. C’è anche un preciso orizzonte temporale: via tutti gli italiani entro 12 mesi. Ma l’annuncio gela il ministro degli Affari Esteri, Moavero, che a Gerusalemme, in conferenza stampa dice di non sapere nulla: «Ritiro Italiano? Lo apprendo da voi. Ne parlerò con Roma».
A saper decifrare le notizie che vengono dagli Stati Uniti, è chiaro che la situazione sul campo è in rapida evoluzione. Per la prima volta dopo mesi di colloqui segreti in Qatar, tra i taleban e l’inviato speciale di Donald Trump si è giunti finalmente a una svolta. Lo ha raccontato al «New York Times» lo stesso Zalmay Khalilzad: i taleban si impegnano a impedire che l’Afghanistan «diventi una piattaforma per gruppi terroristici internazionali», nascerà su questa base un governo transitorio che possa superare l’attuale contrapposizione tra governativi filo-occidentali e insorgenti. Si profila quindi un ritiro anche delle truppe americane, primario interesse del presidente Trump, come si è visto anche in Siria. Intanto, di suoi soldati ne rientra a casa la metà.
E l’Italia? Il nostro contingente, insediato nella provincia di Herat, nell’Afghanistan occidentale, dove ha compiti di addestramento e assistenza alle forze di sicurezza locali, consta attualmente di 800 soldati, destinati a diventare 700 nel giro di qualche settimane. Sotto quel livello, però, i militari dicono che non si può tagliare, perché si metterebbe a rischio la sicurezza di chi resta. A questo punto, si è un bivio: o tutti via o nessuno. Non che sul campo ci fossero quei gran successi che possano fa dichiarare: la missione è compiuta. È subentrata però la variabile-Trump. E gli italiani, che da anni fremono per rientrare, ma poi puntualmente venivano richiamati all’ordine dalla Casa Bianca, hanno preso al balzo l’occasione. Ci sperava già Berlusconi. Lo annunciò vanamente Renzi. Ci riuscirà forse Giuseppe Conte.
