È stato calcolato che circa otto milioni di tonnellate di plastica finiscono ogni anno negli oceani di tutto il mondo, ma ora un nuovo studio dimostra che il 90% di esso può essere ricondotto a dieci grandi fiumi dell’Asia e dell’Africa.
Il problema mondiale della plastica si è rapidamente trasformato in emergenza e attualmente negli oceani si trovano circa cinquemila miliardi di chili di questo materiale.
Le principali iniziative per rimuovere la plastica dagli oceani lasciano ancora il tempo che trovano, così i ricercatori del Centro Helmholtz per la Ricerca Ambientale in Germania hanno condotto uno studio per individuare la fonte dell’inquinamento da plastica negli oceani.
I risultati, pubblicati sulla rivista “Environmental Science & Technology”, mostrano che diminuendo l’inquinamento nei fiumi Yangtze e Gange, la quantità di plastica che finisce nell’oceano ogni anno potrebbe ridursi della metà.
