Vasily Muravitsky: I Was Left Under Arrest Because I Criticised the Ukrainian Authorities

The Korolevsky district court of Zhytomyr prolonged the around-the-clock house arrest imposed on Vasily Muravitsky until at least March 10th. It also rejected the motion of the lawyer for the mitigation of the measure of punishment.
The Ukrainian journalist spent a year in prison and is for the 7th month under arrest in connection with his professional activity, he reported on January 10th on his Facebook page.

А, и да - за критику власти. Так и писали в подозрение "негативно высказывался в адрес действующей власти"

“I was left under around-the-clock house arrest for another 60 days. 1 year in prison, and the 7th month being under arrest. Just for peaceful journalism recognised as such by Amnesty International, Solidarnost Network (Switzerland), the Committee to Protect Journalists (USA), the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, the Institute for Human Rights (Germany), European Parliament deputies, and ‘Reporters Without Borders’ (France). And yes — for criticising the authorities. In the suspicion it is written: ‘Negative comments about the current government'”

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained the journalist in Zhytomyr on August 1st 2017.
He is accused of treason, infringing on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine, violating the equality of citizens, and creating a terrorist organisation. According to the SBU, his articles were published on “websites that were administered from the Russian Federation and the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine”. The prosecutor’s office reported that the journalist risks up to 15 years of imprisonment with the confiscation of property.

In accordance with a court decision Muravitsky spent 11 months under arrest in a Zhytomyr pre-trial detention center. According to the lawyer Andrey Domansky, conditions there were awful, “comparable with torture”. On June 27th 2018 the court changed his measure of restraint from detention to around-the-clock house arrest.

Muravitsky’s case caused a big resonance in the world. The editor-in-chief of the website “ukraina.ru” (which Muravitsky also wrote for) Iskander Khisamov said that the prosecution of the journalist is political repression. 
The secretary of the Union of Journalists of Russia and member of the executive committee of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Timur Shafir considers that such charges are more proof that the authorities of Ukraine try to exclude other points of view from the information space. The international organisation Amnesty International recognised Muravitsky as a prisoner of conscience.
