E’ finita in anticipo la visita del consigliere alla Sicurezza alla Casa Bianca John Bolton in Turchia. Il presidente turco Recep tayyip Erdogan si è rifiutato di riceverlo e Bolton ha lasciato Ankara in anticipo. La sua missione in Medio Oriente si chiude così con una rottura clamorosa. La frattura nasce da una precisa richiesta di Erdogan, e cioè che gli americani nel corso del loro ritiro consegnino alle forze armate turche, o in subordine distruggano, le “venti basi militari costruite nel Nord-Est della Siria”. Bolton si sarebbe rifiutato di accettare questa richiesta, anche perché il ritiro annunciato alla vigilia di Natale dal presidente americano Donald Trump è stato di fatto rinviato se non cancellato.

Erdogan è rimasto però fermo all’accordo raggiunto a dicembre nel corso di una lunga telefonata con Trump. Il ritiro delle truppe statunitensi sembrava imminente e il leader turco si era offerto di sostituirsi a loro nella lotta all’Isis. Concetto che ha ribadito anche oggi.
