Recentemente ha fatto e sta facendo discutere il caso del cronista Claas Relotius. Il reporter dello Spiegel ha ammesso di essersi inventato almeno 10 notizie e per ciò è stato licenziato dallo stesso magazine tedesco.
Prima della scoperta delle notizie inventate, Relotius era considerato un reporter di punta nell'ambito dell'informazione mainstream internazionale.

Inoltre, Relotius era stato nominato anche giornalista dell'anno dalla CNN per il 2014 e aveva vinto l'European Press Prize nel 2017 e, oltre a ciò, aveva scritto per importanti testate come il Welt e l'edizione tedesca del Financial Times.

Su tale vicenda c'è da dire che essa dimostra che il problema delle fake news o delle bufale possa riguardare anche i media mainstream e non solo l'informazione non ufficiale o la cosiddetta controinformazione, come spesso si tende a pensare. Oltre a questo, c'è da dire che la vicenda dimostra che le fake news sono trasversali e possono interessare anche la difesa della cosiddetta 'narrazione egemone'.
Insomma, negli ultimi mesi e anni alcuni media mainstream e gruppi politici hanno fatto credere che il problema delle fake news fosse principalmente legato a una certa 'informazione alternativa' o a una certa politica(Brexit, elezione di Trump ecc) ma invece la questione è assai più ampia.
