Fox News' Martha MacCallum asked Lindsey Graham why he is now suddenly okay with Trump firing Sessions. He tied his tongue in knots trying to answer.
When Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was asked more than a year ago about what would happen if President Donald Trump moved to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions or curtail Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia, he was emphatic. "If Jeff Sessions is fired, there will be holy hell to pay," he said. "Any effort to go after Mueller could be the beginning of the end of the Trump presidency, unless Mueller did something wrong."
Flash forward to this week. Trump just fired Sessions, replaced him with stone-cold partisan Matthew Whitaker, the Mueller investigation is in serious jeopardy, and there is no outcry to speak of from the Republican side, including from Graham.
On Thursday evening, Fox News' Martha MacCallum brought Graham on to discuss recent events, and then played a clip of Graham's original speech to him, reminding him of what he said.
"So given where we are now, what do you say now?" said MacCallum.
Graham seemed confused by the clip.
"So when was that? What year?" he asked.
"July 2017," replied MacCallum. "Things have changed."
Graham laughed nervously. "So what I've been saying for months, is that everybody, every president deserves an attorney general they have confidence in, and they can work with. I like Jeff Sessions, I've known Jeff for a long time, I hope he goes and runs for his old Senate seat in Alabama. It's clear to me it's not working, was not working, between Attorney General Sessions and President Trump. So for months now I've been saying, after the election, if the president wants to change attorney generals [sic], he has every right to do so."
"I am not at all alarmed about Mueller being interfered with," he added. "I think Mr. Whitaker was a good pick. I think he's going to be as fair and impartial as Eric Holder and Loretta Lynch were."

As much as Graham would like to dance around it, it's a long way from saying there will be "holy hell to pay" for firing Sessions, to claiming that Trump has "every right" to get rid of Sessions if it's "not working." And the fact of the matter is, Whitaker's long list of partisan attacks on the Mueller probe and on any attempt to investigate the president shows he absolutely cannot be trusted to maintain the integrity of Mueller's investigation.
It is clear that Graham is uninterested in following through on his prior criticism of Trump and preserving the rule of law.
