Negli ultimi anni si è fortemente diffusa a livello mainstream la trap music, prima negli USA e poi nel resto del mondo. La popolarità del genere ha causato e sta causando accessi dibattiti tra i alcuni suoi sostenitori e quelli del rap più tradizionale.
Il fatto è che vi sono delle importanti differenze tra il rap classico e la trap, la quale è nata da un'evoluzione del Southern Rap(1).
Andando maggiormente nello specifico, tra le differenze più importanti vi sono quelle stilistiche e testuali nonché quelle legate all'attitudine.
Difatti, nella trap le sonorità prettamente musicali sono maggiormente oscure e i testi mediamente più crudi ed espliciti rispetto al rap tradizionale.
Inoltre, vi sono delle evidenti differenze anche nelle tecniche vocali e ritmiche e si va dal classico 'ritmo 4-4' del rap al 'non andare a tempo' del sottogenere della trap noto come drill(2).
Oltre a ciò, vi sono evidenti differenze nell'immagine che danno gli artisti di sé e nella loro estetica(3).
Difatti, se una buona parte del 'rap tradizionale'(specialmente old school) era fondata su un'atteggiamento sociale indirettamente o direttamente critico ciò potrebbe non sembrare per il trap, ritenuto maggiormente 'disimpegnato'.
Beninteso, bisogna ricordare che anche molto rap è legato alla 'leggerezza' e all'esaltazione(provocatoria o meno) degli eccessi della società di consumo e che anche la trap può essere socialmente impegnata nonostante l'apparenza farebbe pensare di no.
Detto ciò e come già accennato in precedenza, la trap è parte della musica hip hop e rappresenta un'evoluzione della 'South Coast'.
