After a year-long decision process, it appears Amazon has finally chosen the locations for its second headquarters: Queens, New York, and Arlington, Virginia.
The company has yet to formally announce its decision, but according to news leaks, Amazon is planning to split its “HQ2” between two sites: the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens and the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington, a suburb of Washington, DC.
More than 200 local and state governments submitted proposals for Amazon’s consideration last year after the company announced it was looking for a North American city to house its $5 billion, 50,000-employee second headquarters. The company’s home base is in Seattle.
Amazon framed the hunt for its second headquarters as a national competition, with the winning city benefiting from an influx of tens of thousands of new jobs. But many are concerned about gentrification, rising housing costs, and an overall lack of transparency in the application process. Activists in DC and New York have opposed HQ2 for months.
