The nation's largest association of churches is calling for Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to be withdrawn.
On Wednesday, according to The Hill, the National Council of Churches — the nation's largest coalition of churches, including over 40 Protestant and Eastern Orthodox denominations — released a letter condemning Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, and calling for him to be withdrawn.
"Judge Kavanaugh exhibited extreme partisan bias and disrespect towards certain members of the committee and thereby demonstrated that he possesses neither the temperament nor the character essential for a member of the highest court in our nation," it said in a statement. In addition, they noted, Kavanaugh made "several misstatements and some outright falsehoods," in conversation with the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Furthermore, "Judge Kavanaugh’s extensive judicial and political record is troubling with regard to issues of voting rights, racial and gender justice, health care, the rights of people with disabilities, and environmental protections. This leads us to believe that he cannot be an impartial justice in cases that are sure to come before him at the Court."
The National Council of Churches later amended their statement to add, "We are deeply disturbed by the multiple allegations of sexual assault and call for a full and unhindered investigation of these accusations."
Kavanaugh's nomination by President Donald Trump has ignited a firestorm of controversy as several women have come forward to accuse him of sexual assault, which resulted in an explosive round of testimony last Thursday and a reopened background investigation by the FBI.
Additionally, Kavanaugh has been accused of lying under oath to the Senate about everything from whether he had advance warning of the assault allegations by Deborah Ramirez, to whether he watched the testimony of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.
