"It’s just not right," the Arizona senator said.
Donald Trump mocked Dr. Christine Blasey Ford at a rally Tuesday night, because of course that’s what one of the worst people in the world would do. Trump highlighted the things Ford didn’t remember about being sexually assaulted by Brett Kavanaugh—the exact address, the exact date—rather than the things she did remember—being sexually assaulted by Brett Kavanaugh as he laughed, and called into question her recollection of having had one beer rather than acknowledging the widely shared accounts of Kavanaugh as a frequent, sloppy, aggressive drunk.

“One beer,” Trump said repeatedly, implying that Ford is lying and was herself blackout drunk. “That’s the only thing I remember,” he characterized her as saying, when in reality she remembered “the uproarious laughter between the two, and their having fun at my expense.” She remembered that when Kavanaugh put his hand over her mouth to stop her from yelling “It was hard for me to breathe, and I thought that Brett was accidentally going to kill me.”

But according to Trump, all she remembered is that she only had “one beer,” and now “a man’s life is in tatters, a man’s life is shattered” emphasis on the “man,” because that’s what matters to Trump.

Eternally wavering Republican Sen. Jeff Flake thinks Trump’s comments are “kind of appalling.”

There’s no time and no place for remarks like that. But to discuss something this sensitive at a political rally is just not right. It’s just not right. I wish he hadn’t have done it. It’s kind of appalling

Does that mean Flake will finally take a stand against Trump and vote against confirming Kavanaugh? Don’t count on it! Flake is still very much a Republican, even if gross indecency makes him squirm a little, and he’s spineless on top of it. For what a real response to Trump’s remarks looks like, look to Democrats.
