"This may be a breakout moment for the junior senator from California."

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) has been one of the most aggressive Senate Democrats when it comes to questioning President Donald Trump’s U.S. Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, whose Senate confirmation hearings began on Tuesday, September 4. And according to conservative Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin, some of Harris’ questioning indicates that the California senator might have some bombshell information linking Kavanaugh to special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia-related investigation.

Questioning Kavanaugh during the hearings, Harris asked the High Court nominee about any communications he might have had with the law firm Kasowitz, Benson, Torres—whose Marc Kasowitz has represented Trump—about Mueller’s investigation. And according to Rubin, Harris’ questions indicated that she could have some damaging information about Kavanaugh that’s she holding onto.

Rubin, in a September 6 column titled “The Second-Most-Intense Guessing Game in D.C.,” wrote, “If Harris has evidence (that Kavanaugh) had an inappropriate or conflict-creating interchange with the president’s lawyer, it is critical we hear about it. If not, it is unfair to leave the inference hanging out there.”

However, Rubin went on to say that Harris may be holding back “because of the cockamamie restrictions on documents that Republicans have erected.”

Rubin asserted, “It is time for Democrats to cry foul, put whatever they have out there and let Republicans justify their attempts to hide the ball. This may be a breakout moment for the junior senator from California. Harris, on Tuesday, showed her flair for the dramatic in raising objections over Republicans’ refusal to make hundreds of thousands of pages of documents available to the public.”

According to Rubin, “White House paranoia runs rampant, and sometimes, paranoids have reason to think someone is out to get them. The president’s mental and emotional state is called into question by his own advisers. Given all this, one wonders if the White House was caught flat-footed on something significant, and if it is now prepared to deal with a bobble in an all-critical nomination.”

Rubin also suggested that if Harris really does have some damning information on Kavanaugh that harms his chances of being confirmed to the High Court, it will greatly enhance her popularity in Democratic Party politics.

“If (Harris) doesn’t really have anything of significance,” Rubin wrote, “the incident will be forgotten—or cited as evidence that she is all show. However, if she’s dug up a nugget of something that could throw the nomination off track, she’ll be an instant Democratic heroine.”

The conservative Rubin has been one of Trump’s most outspoken critics on the right, often criticizing the president in her Washington Post column as well as during her frequent appearances on MSNBC.
