“Do you consider yourself the candidate for white nationalists in the state of Virginia?” Sharpton asked.

Corey Stewart, the Virginia Republican nominee for Senate who once praised southern succession, on Sunday spoke with Reverend Al Sharpton on MSNBC’s “Politics Nation” — and repeatedly deflected when asked about his support for Confederate monuments.

Sharpton wasted no time confronting Stewart on his neo-Confederate posture.

“Do you consider yourself the candidate for white nationalists in the state of Virginia?” Sharpton asked.

Stewart replied that his constituents are “sick and tired of talking about race all the time” and “want to move on.”

“They have a lot more important issues to talk about than race on a constant basis, which is what we get out of you and the rest of the media on a daily basis,” Stewart asserted.

Sharpton explained “it is very difficult if you live in a society where your job, your education, your safety is determined by your race, not to talk about your reality,” before playing a clip of Stewart praising secessionists in a 2017 speech.

“Now you say today we want to get past race after you talked about how we should praise and erect people whose only role in history was to uphold slavery and commit treason against the United States,” Sharpton explained.

“You know, why is it that you on the left are so obsessed with what happened 150 years ago?” Stewart asked.

“No, no, I’m talking about you last year, I’m talking about Corey Stewart running for governor last year, that's what you said, you went back 150 years ago.”

“People don't care what happened 150 years ago,” Stewart shot back. “Historians love this stuff. I love history. But the end of the day, we need to look at what the problems are are today.”

“All you do is divide Americans by race,” Stewart claimed before insisting Sharpton’s “been a race-hustler for many years.”
