He was calling the officer out for praise — but bizarrely delivered a backhanded compliment.

While holding an event meant to honor the work of agents at Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, President Donald Trump gave an odd backhanded compliment to a CBP officer he was trying to single out for praise.

The event was filled with the usual insulting Trump antics — referring to undocumented immigrants with the intentionally demeaning term "illegal aliens" and repeatedly calling the CBP the CBC (Congressional Black Caucus). But then he singled out an agent named "Adrian," who Trump commended for apprehending an alleged smuggling operation.

He decided, apparently on the fly, to call Adrian to the microphone.

"Adrian's here with us," he said. "Thank you Adrian. Thank you — that's a lot of lives. That's great. Adrian, come here, I want to ask you a question. So how did you — come here, come here. You're not nervous, right? Speaks perfect English!"

The officer joined Trump at the lectern, smiling and shaking his hand. He showed no sign of being offended by the remark. But still, many noted that it was a bizarre and potentially insulting comment to make about someone you're trying to compliment.
