MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace revealed Monday that in addition to the public outrage President Donald Trump stirred over the weekend with a new tweet about the Russia investigation, the commander-in-chief is facing serious legal peril for him, his family and his aides in relation to his claims.
"Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower. This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics - and it went nowhere," Trump wrote in the Sunday tweet. "I did not know about it!"
While Trump seemed to think his claims were exculpatory, many argued the opposite is true.
"It's a presidential tweet that may ultimately amount to a smoking gun in the investigation into whether Donald Trump Jr. conspired with the Russians to impact the 2016 election and whether the president's aides obstructed justice when they lied about the meeting being about adoption," Wallace said on "Deadline: White House" Monday.
She noted that, despite Trump's claims to the contrary, accepting or soliciting campaign help from a foreign adversary is neither legal nor common in American politics. Many experts argue that even just taking a meeting like the one Trump Jr. had is a criminal violation.
"The tweet signals growing panic from the president himself. and there may very well be cause for his concern," Wallace continued. "A source close to the Trump legal effort tells me today that the president's conduct since the Trump Tower meeting — his efforts to cover up the real purpose of the meeting and conversations he has had with White House aides about it point to an increasing likelihood that the president could be vulnerable to charges of witness tampering and obstruction of justice."
