What does it mean when your employees are this duplicitous?
Omarosa Manigault-Newman, a former high-profile contestant on "The Apprentice" who became an aide to President Donald Trump, secretly recorded some of her conversations with the president, according to a new report from the Daily Beast.
The report cites multiple sources aware of the recordings who say that the former White House staffer used the tapes as leverage for a book deal. One of the sources claimed to have heard one of Manigault's recordings.
The report is particularly notable given the fervor around the fact that Michael Cohen, the president's former fixer and lawyer, recorded conversations with Trump prior to the 2016 election. Those recordings have since been seized by federal investigators, and they may be used in cases against Cohen or even Trump himself.
Trump has himself used the threat of recording conversations before, though it appears to have been largely bluster. After he fired FBI Director James Comey, who then revealed that the president had pressured on him to block a federal investigation, Trump implied on Twitter that he may have "tapes" of their conversations.
In response, Comey said, "Lordy, I hope there are tapes." Trump later said, however, that he did not have recordings of Comey.
One source called one of Maginault's recordings "anodyne," suggesting the tapes might be relatively mundane in character. Since Maginault never appeared to be a part of Trump's trusted inner circle — which Cohen was — it seems unlikely that she would possess any damning confessions from the president. But the material she recorded could still potentially be deeply embarrassing.
