"It's kind of weird," she said.

Adviser to the president Kellyanne Conway has a habit of making oddball and off-kilter comments to the news media, but her question to the pool of reporters covering the White House Friday morning really set a bizarre new low, even for her.

After giving comments to the reporters in front of the White House entrance, she turned around and started heading for the building. A reporter called out a question about President Donald Trump's targeting of former CIA Director John Brennan. Trump recently revoked Brennan's security clearance after the former official became a vociferous critic of the administration.

Conway stopped and walked back to the press, defending the president's actions.

"Why is everybody so obsessed with the president of the United States that they can't even begin or finish a sentence without mentioning his name five times?" she said. "It's kind of weird."

She continued: "And it's infecting people on the news now who fancy themselves security experts."

It was a bizarre comment to make to a group of White House reporters, whose job is literally to report on and talk about the president and his administration. It's also particularly striking given the fact that Trump loves to insert himself into the center of every news cycle — his latest attack on Brennan is just the latest example of an unnecessary breach of precedent designed to drive the media narrative.
