Un'indagine condotta per la prima volta al mondo ha permesso di studiare i meccanismi neurobiologici alla base di tale straordinaria capacità.
La ricerca è stata condotta in Italia presso la Fondazione Santa Lucia Irccs di Roma, e pubblicata sulla rivista Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, ha coinvolto numerosi centri di ricerca: l'Istituto Superiore di Sanità, l'Università di Roma La Sapienza, l'Università della California - Irvine, con il coordinamento dell'Università degli Studi di Perugia.
"Abbiamo monitorato otto persone con ipermemoria, scovate dal gruppo di ricerca nella popolazione italiana a partire dal 2015, e 21 soggetti di controllo con memoria normo-tipica", afferma Valerio Santangelo, prima firma dello studio, dell'ateneo di Perugia e collaboratore scientifico della Fondazione Santa Lucia Irccs.
"La cosa straordinaria - continua - è che, oltre a ricordare il giorno della settimana di una data lontana nel tempo (per es. ricordano che il 3 agosto del 2011 era un mercoledì!), sono anche in grado di dire come erano vestiti in quella giornata, che cosa hanno mangiato, quale film hanno visto, etc. Ancora più sorprendente è la completa assenza di esitazione o di sforzi consapevoli quando tali soggetti devono richiamare alla memoria eventi che hanno vissuto anche decine di anni prima".
ll gruppo di studio continua la ricerca di soggetti ipermemori nella popolazione italiana attraverso la somministrazione di test ad hoc effettuati telefonicamente in cui i soggetti devono rispondere a domande riguardanti la collocazione temporale (giorno, mese e anno) di eventi pubblici accaduti durante il corso della loro vita.
