GOP lawmakers in the House have been on a quest to discredit the FBI.
Former FBI Director James Comey may soon face the scrutiny of Congress for his actions during and after the 2016 presidential election, according to a new report from The Hill.
House Republicans are planning to bring Comey in for an interview behind closed doors, the report says, and they're considering issuing a subpoena if he does not come willingly.
One anonymous lawmaker told the outlet that Comey would likely testify privately, rather than in a public setting, as he has previously. The Hill says that both the Judiciary Committee and Oversight Committee are "eager to press the former FBI chief on a series of decisions he made during the 2016 campaign and after President Trump fired him in May 2017."
Comey's actions were already meticulously reviewed in a recent report from Department of Justice inspector general about the Hillary Clinton email investigation. It found that Comey had acted insubordinately and contrary to policy in his handling of the case.
It's not clear what else congressional investigators wish to learn about the investigation. They may just see interrogating Comey as another opportunity to find information they could spin to smear the special counsel investigation of Russian interference in the election and potential collusion with the Trump campaign. House Republicans have repeatedly used their powers to put pressure on the FBI probe and to sow doubt about the merits of the case, despite any substantial basis for legitimate criticism of the investigation.
And while Republicans opposed to the Russia investigation cheered the IG's criticism of Comey, the report actually includes much more evidence that the FBI was biased against and damaging to Clinton in the run-up to the election. It finds that there's no evidence that anti-Trump bias affected any official decisions. This glaring contradiction with their preferred narrative, though, hasn't yet stalled Republican conspiracy-mongering.
