Cohen once said, "I'll do anything to protect Mr. Trump."
The signal is coming through loud and clear: Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former lawyer and fixer, wants to cooperate with federal investigators.
In recent weeks, Cohen has made a number of moves indicating that he's willing to turn against the president if federal investigators from the Southern District of New York or the FBI want him to. CNN's Don Lemon noted Monday night that sources say he sees himself as analogous to John Dean, President Richard Nixon's White House counsel who eventually pleaded guilty and became a key witness for prosecutors.
CNN analyst Gloria Borger also reported Monday that Cohen's attitude toward the president, to whom he was once devoted, has completely shifted. Cohen once said on Fox News, "I'll do anything to protect Mr. Trump" — but that no longer appears to be the case.
"Michale Cohen feels under attack by Rudy Giuliani and the president," Borger said.
"One source said to me this is his version of July 4th, which is Independence Day," she continued. "He's no longer going to take a bullet for the President and that he's going to go in whatever direction he feels he needs to go in."
She added: "What we have going on here is sort of a battle for the hearts and minds, but we really don't know what's going on in the Southern District of New York at this particular moment."
