Former Bush White House official Peter Wehner told MSNBC that President Donald Trump stands alone as the only American president who has publicly betrayed his country.
Wehner said, "Donald Trump is a corrupt person—a person with a disordered personality." He described Trump's walkback of his disastrous performance at a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin as "a joke."
"Look, what Trump said with Putin when he was on the stage in Helsinki revealed what his views are, what his heart is," Wehner explained.
"You had an American president stand up and betray the United States," he continued. "There have been 45 presidents in the history of the United States. Many have of them have disappointed people. A few have done serious damage. But only one has publicly betrayed the Unitied States, and that is Donald Trump."
Wehner also explained the importance of a president's rhetoric in shaping the nation.
"Words reflect reality. Words shape the moral sensibilities of people," he said. "They touch people's moral imagination. They inspire people. They summon people to great causes. They can cause people to act in atrocious ways as well."
