President Donald Trump appears to have invited paying members of his Mar-a-Lago and Trump International Golf Club on private tours of Air Force One during 2017.
BuzzFeed reports that the individuals invited on the tours would have paid "thousands of dollars annually" to Trump-owned organizations for their memberships.
According to the report:
Two separate tours were scheduled at the Atlantic Aviation FBO at Palm Beach International for 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Feb. 18, 2017 — hours before Trump held his first 2020 campaign rally less than 120 miles away at the Orlando-Melbourne International Airport hangars.
Redacted White House records provided clues to the unusual nature of the tours. BuzzFeed writes, "Unlike the other records, they don’t list an agency name or title of the official in charge of the tours."
White House spokesperson Stephanie Grisham wouldn't deny the tours.
"This is something that has been done in past administrations going back years and is not out of the ordinary,” she claimed. And Grisham defended the alleged guest list by saying, "You have to keep in mind that Mar-a-Lago has been the President’s home for many years.”
While it is true that rides on Air Force One are not unusual in and of themselves, rides granted to high-paying members of a president's personal business don't appear to be precedented and represent a clear ethical concern.
