Il solstizio d'estate è un fenomeno astronomico che tradizionalmente coincide con l'inizio dell'estate, cadendo nella giornata del 21 giugno.
Un momento attesissimo nell'emisfero settentrionale del Pianeta, dovuto alla posizione del Sole e all'inclinazione della Terra rispetto all'astro.
Durante il suo moto apparente, la stella madre del Sistema Solare, attorno alla quale orbitano tutti i pianeti, raggiunge il punto più alto rispetto all'orizzonte, donando così il massimo numero di ore di luce possibili nel corso della giornata. Oggi, ad esempio, l'Italia potrà godere di un'illuminazione solare di ben 15 ore e 14 minuti: da domani, invece, il Soleinizierà a spostarsi progressivamente più a Sud e le giornate inizieranno ad accorciarsi nuovamente, fino al solstizio d'inverno che cadrà il 21 dicembre. Nell'altro emisfero, quello australe, la situazione è rovesciata: il 21 giugno è il giorno più breve dell'anno e il 21 dicembre invece il più esteso.
Il solstizio è dovuto alla traiettoria con cui il Pianeta orbita intorno al Sole: l’asse di rotazione della Terra e il piano dell'orbita non sono infatti perpendicolari, ma si incontrano con un angolo di circa 23.5 gradi. Questa è la ragione per cui per tutto l'inverno, nell'emisfero boreale, il Sole appare all'orizzonte di giorno in giorno sempre più elevato, arrivando così alla sua altezza massima proprio durante il mese di giugno.
Tantissime le persone che festeggiano il solstizio d'estate, anche se il luogo per eccellenza dove viene celebrata questa giornata è Stonehenge.
