"We don't have that authority nor that voice any longer."
Former Chair of the Republican National Committee Michael Steeled despaired about his party's disintegrating values on Monday as President Donald Trump's policy of separating immigrant children and parents at the border cascaded into a full-blown humanitarian crisis.
"There's absolute hypocrisy here," Steele said on MSNBC's "Deadline: White House." "This was the party that was pro-family, and we never said in our articulation of that profamily value, 'Oh, well, we're only talking about American families. We're only talking about white families. We're only talking about Trump families.' We talked about families."
He added: "We had a voice in that fight. We don't have that authority nor that voice any longer."
Host Nicolle Wallace turned the focus to the president's defenders in the party and in the administration. "What are they doing?" she asked.
"It's good to have the favor of the king. That's the most important value at this moment in time. It's not about principle, ideals, or values. It's when they go into that building and the president says 'I like what you said on TV today.' That's the only thing that matters," Steele said.
