The conservative host cheered a poll showing that most Americans think Trump is doing a bad job. Yay?

While Fox News's Laura Ingraham did her best Thursday night to put a positive spin on President Donald Trump's approval rating, she inadvertently revealed just how low the American people's opinion of the commander-in-chief really is.

"Voters are feeling the improvement in the economy, and they're rewarding President Trump with higher approval ratings," she said on her show "The Ingraham Angle." "A new Wall Street Journal/NBC poll has the president at 44 percent — the highest ever in that poll — which is also on par with where Reagan was in 1982, and where Obama was in 2010. Pretty good!"

Not quite.

Ingraham neglects to mention that Trump's disapproval rating is 53 percent — meaning he's actually underwater in terms of public approval with a nine-point gap. Though she's correct that Obama's approval rating dipped to 44 percent at points in 2010, his disapproval rating was never as high that year as Trump's is now.

And while 44 percent is Trump's high in the WSJ/NBC poll — as Ingraham noted with pride — 44 percent was actually the lowest point for Obama's approval rating in 2010 (per Gallup). Most of the year his approval rating was significantly higher, and several times it rose to 50 percent or above.

And at the same time, the U.S. economy was just barely out of a recession in 2010. The unemployment rate was 9.3 percent by the end of the year.

So while Trump's highest approval rating now (in this one poll) is as a high as Obama's was at his low point in 2010, that actually reflects much worse on Trump. If the economy is going well, it's relatively easy for a president to have a high approval rating — and Trump isn't even succeeding at that. Obama's approval rating was not all that impressive in 2010, but that's not too surprising, given how terrible the economic conditions were in the country.

At the end of his presidency — with an economy Trump continually described as terrible — Obama had a 59 percent approval rate.

But it actually gets even worse for Ingraham and Trump. Because in 2010, Obama's party was devastated in the midterm elections — a defeat that reverberated throughout the rest of his presidency.

That's a pretty bizarre definition of "pretty good."
