At one point, GOP Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) asked CNN's Poppy Harlow, "Are you debating me?"
CNN’s Poppy Harlow on Thursday battled Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) on Donald Trump’s hasty executive order ending his hasty policy separating children from their parents at the southern border.
Harlow asked Brat what Trump should do “today” about the 2,000-plus children currently in U.S. custody away from their parents. Brat tried to claim there’s “huge paper work that identifies where the kids are going so everyone can get matched up again.”
“No, no, congressman there's not,” Harlow corrected. “Health and Human Services came out last night and said we're still figuring this out. What do we do with these kids that are detained right now?”
“I've heard that but I've also heard they had a clarification statement—I don't know if you miss that had one,” Brat began.
“I didn't miss it,” Harlow shot back. “I didn't miss it. That was the clarification. They're still figuring it out. I’m just asking you … is there something you think the president should take, an executive order action to mandate what happened to these children?”
Brat declared he wanted “to get to the central thesis” which is that “the democrats haven't thought out” the impact of what he described as an open border policy.
“I understand you want to have the political fight but I also think that children are above politics, so I to know what you think should happen to these kids right now,” Harlow replied.
“They should be reunited with their parents,” Brat said. “That’s clear. That's what we want to happen.”
“Why did this end up getting here?” Brat continued before laying the blame on Democrats he said “want a talking point in November.”
“They don't want to help the kids,” Brat claimed.
“You think all Democrats don't want to help kids?” Harlow asked. “Every single Aemocrat, a lot of Republicans would take issue with that statement.”
