A couple years ago I upgraded to W10 out of necessity when my old W8 pc went kaput suddenly. By all accounts, the W10 pc is vastly superior to my old one
i7-4790 3.60GHz 16gb RAM + GTX960 4gb GDDR5 256gb SSD for OS alone, 3gb SATA for files & 1tb SSD for games (added later) - W10 Home
One thing I noticed straight away is the pc would become sluggier over time if I've had it on for a couple days or longer. Various programs would take 1-4 seconds longer to start and general desktop responsiveness would be less than expected, for example the Start menu popping up after 1 second as opposed to immediately, as if I'm running a CPU-hungry process. Same goes with basic programs like Notepad++ or even MSPaint.
I also noticed the explorer.exe process' memory usage would increase over time as well, at some stages reaching 150-200mb as opposed to 20-30mb after a clean reboot.
Restarting explorer.exe increases desktop responsiveness but once again it slowly deteriorates over time. When I do a clean restart, everything is just fine as if I freshly installed W10 a few minutes ago, like brand new. Then within 12 hours it would become sluggish again.
All this was noticeable from the very beginning, and I never had such a problem with W8. W10 was preinstalled on the machine.
I've performed multiple virus scans with several different programs, all clean. Defragmenting a SSD is not recommended so I haven't touched it with the defrag. I don't run any memory-hungry background programs nor do I have multiple windows open most of the time.
I've googled this issue several times and it seems quite a few W10 users are experiencing the same, but no solution is ever given.
Does anyone here have any idea what's causing it?
