For some reason that I do not remember, I changed the owner of C:\Users\Default from SYSTEM to my user, which led to a bunch of Windows apps being broken.

For instance, when I open up the Photos app, all I get is a black small window, and 1-2 seconds later it shuts down. Opening a photo directly using Photos leads to "The app didn't start.".

Here what I've tried without success:

  • Change owner back to SYSTEM
  • Open PowerShell as admin and run Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml". Since this command doesn't seem to provide any feedback in the terminal, I just let this run for half an hour or so before rebooting.
  • I noticed I had a lot of strange entries in the Apps & Features list, all without title and "Microsoft Corporation" as subtitle. I went into all of these, pressed "Reset" and rebooted.
  • Run the app troubleshooter.

I really want to avoid having to reset the PC, all tough that seems increasingly unavoidable. Also, I do not have any restore points.

Ideas?
