I have a Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 7 motherboard, fitted with an Intel i5-6600k processor and 32GB of Corsair memory, part number CMK32GX4M4A2666C16.
Speccy reports that my BIOS is dated 19Oct2015, but if I go to Gigabyte's support website, the most recent BIOS is dated 9Mar2018, or just a couple months ago.
The best wisdom I was able to find with a brief Google search suggests that it's generally a poor idea to update the BIOS willy-nilly, but it didn't address whether it's a good idea to do so if you're running a two year old version and have literally never updated the BIOS since initial purchase.
The relevant changes appear to be:
- XMP compatibility
- VCore adjustments
- Microcode updates to address HT flaws and security vulnerabilities
Given that, does it make sense to update a two year old BIOS?
