So my PC has two problems which I am sure are part of the same problem.
1) When I start my PC it turns on for a moment without displaying anything on the screen and shuts down after a few seconds. After 1-3 cycles of that it boots just fine and continues running without problem (with exception of problem 2)
2) When playing certain games (so far this only happened in Overwatch and Fortnite) it can happen that the PC suddenly freezes with a loud buzzing sound coming from the headset/speaker. This doesn't happen predictably, sometimes I can run these games for hours and sometimes it happens every 30 minutes and doesn't seem to be related to particularly busy moments in the game. Event viewer just shows kernel-power event ID 41 which I think just means I had to cut the power to restart.
I downloaded HWinfo to monitor temperatures etc. and ran some stress tests (prime95, FurMark,memtest), none of them however caused a freeze.
During a CPU stress test the cores never get hotter than 87°C and the fan seemed to run just fine.
The GPU never got hotter than 69°C and the fan ran fine as well
I ran memtest using all 16GB of ram for about 1 hour without errors.
The only thing that was odd (as far as I can tell) was the VRM temp of the Mainboard which got up to 115°C, which I am not sure is normal (This was when CPU and GPU were at 100%)
My specs are:
Mainboard: GIGABYTE Z170-gaming K3
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080
CPU: Intel i7-6700K
16GB RAM
Running Windows 10, drivers are up to date
I don't feel like the games that cause this should be too taxing for my PC and run at 120+ FPS without problem, and as I said it can happen at any time even when theres not much going on. I've had a similar problem before with a faulty mainboard (same type) which caused the PC to freeze with a bluescreen. The current problem doesn't cause a bluescreen though.
So of what I read I assume it's either a heat issue (although only the VRM temp of the mainboard is high) or some part is broken (I'd assume the mainboard or maybe the PSU). A heat issue wouldn't explain the failed boot attempts though I guess.
So googling didn't really help me pinpoint the problem and similar symptoms appear to have several possible causes, so maybe someone has an idea what to do next.
