i7-2600K, Asrock something-or-other, 32GB of high-end DDR3. This computer randomly locks up with no provocation, but will sometimes run fine for long periods of time (hours). It ran fine for years without any issue.
Checking it out, I experienced a crash after simply plugging in an external HDD. Then I rebooted and it'd somehow corrupted the external HDD's driver, so I uninstalled it in device manager, rebooted, plugged it back in, and it's now working fine.
I'd love to be able to salvage the CPU or the motherboard but under this circumstance I have no idea how to determine where the problem lies. It could even be the RAM. A virus possibly? The customer already removed the GPU to eliminate that possibility and it still crashed.
So far all I've tried is running Prime95 for an hour (ran fine, no errors), and running Memtest86+ for several hours (again, no errors). What's the next step and how do I determine if it's the CPU or motherboard that I need to replace? I've fairly confident the RAM's fine.
