MSNBC's Rachel Maddow explained Thursday night what exactly appears to be going on with congressional Republican's efforts to intimidate the Department of Justice, and the conclusion is deeply troubling.
"The reason it feels like we're getting to the edge of a cliff," she said, "is because the Justice Department knows exactly what these members of Congress are up to."
House Republicans have been aggressively demanding documents from top Justice Department officials in recent weeks and months, many of which relate to special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation. When the department has been slow or reluctant to comply, as it may be with active investigations, Republicans have charged the department leadership of violating the duty to allow congressional oversight.
In recent days, the situation has become so tense that drafts of impeachment charges have been floated for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has said that he is being publicly and privately threatened and that the department will not be extorted.
Maddow pointed to a report in the New York Times from Nicholas Fandos and Adam Goldman, who said the Justice Department now believes that Congressional Republicans are trying to use their oversight powers to find out information about Mueller's investigation into President Donald Trump and then leak it to the White House.
"If this was a private citizen who was somehow stealing information about the inner workings of the Mueller investigation and then shoveling it to the White House to tip the president off, we would expect that private citizen to end up in trouble for that as a matter of obstruction of justice," she said. "Could a member of Congress be charged with that?"
