John Heilemann, an MSNBC analyst, explained how in one sense, Trump is a strong opponent for Mueller.
MSNBC analyst John Heilemann explained what he takes to be President Donald Trump's strategy for undermining and legal case that special counsel Robert Mueller may bring against him as a part of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
In Heilemann's view, the president's strategy is not based around any legal considerations but around public relations.
"What happens in court matters a lot, clearly, and the legal realm is super important," Heilemann said. "But the reality is, as we saw with [President Bill] Clinton and other cases, this ultimately could be a political process. Impeachment is a political process, a quasi-legal process, but not a fully legal process. So what the court of public opinion thinks matters a lot."
He continued: "And what Donald Trump is clearly trying to do right now, when you think about his strategy, is to try to say 'I'm taking all of this stuff out of the legal realm, and I'm going to throw it all to the body politic and say, witch hunt, hoax, conspiracy, no collusion.' And try to get enough public support that when the day comes, the day of reckoning comes, that he'll have enough of the public behind him that that will trump the law."
He goes on to say that in this way, Trump and Mueller have something in common. Both have well-crafted — though entirely different — public images that, in part, will determine what kind of hand they can play if and when a final conflict comes before the American people.
