Rep. Devin Nunes is an obvious Trump partisan, but he thinks he should have unlimited access to the FBI's investigation.

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow explained Monday night why the House GOP's efforts to obtain more information about the beginnings of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into President Donald Trump's campaign are so ridiculous and undermine the basic principles of such an investigation.

Members of the House Intelligence Committee, led by Rep. Devin Nunes, have been attacking the investigation and the bureau for months, insinuating that the probe is a political effort to take down the president.

As a part of Republican efforts to delegitimize the investigation, Nunes and other House Republicans have sent endless subpoenas for documents from the Justice Department, even as the investigation is ongoing. When DOJ officials declined, as was expected, House Republicans threatened impeachment, and officials have begun giving in.

These efforts escalated recently, with Republicans seeking information about a confidential informant, whose name has since been released, even as the bureau warned such requests could endanger American lives.

"The Justice Department has been sliding down this slippery slope for months," Maddow said. "Handing over the kind of information they never release about ongoing investigations. But the identity of a confidential source? The government records about that source? The evidence that source was able to turn up?"

She continued: "You're going to hand that over to people like Congressman Nunes — who is absolutely going to hand that to the president whose campaign is being investigated here? I mean, that's insane. He was a senior official on the Trump transition! He was a part of the Trump campaign! You're going to give him this documentation? The kind of information you never hand over about any investigation, you're going to hand it over to him, in the middle of that investigation? That's insane."
