Fox News' Sean Hannity was not happy about Monday night's New York Times story that detailed dozens of questions special counsel Robert Mueller would like to ask President Donald Trump.
The questions in the report focus on what Trump knew about potential collusion with Russia during the 2016 campaign and about his actions with regard to the FBI's investigation of the matter. Many questions probe his state of mind and intentions at various points while he undertook certain actions.
"This New York Times thing?" Hannity said. "Put it in your fireplace and burn it. Because we have sources that say — half of these questions are dumb anyway. 'What was in your mind at the time?' You don't punish people, or charge people — not that you can charge a sitting president — and the president has any right to fire whoever he wants — for the thoughts they have in their head."
In his haste to dismiss the reporting, Hannity made several obvious errors. The most glaring is that law enforcement officials charge people based on an individual' state of mind all the time. Murder, for instance, is distinguished from manslaughter, because of the state of mind of the person who carried out the killing. Obstruction of justice, like many other crimes, is a crime of intent, which requires a certain state of mind which investigators try to ascertain.
