He cited the upcoming midterm elections as the key factor.
The far-right attorney best known for representing Kentucky court clerk Kim Davisand Alabama failed GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore, says he believes in a few months the U.S. Supreme Court will end the rights to same-sex marriage and abortion. Liberty Counsel chief Mat Staver says overturning two vital Supreme Court precedents: Roe v. Wade and Obergerfell, will happen soon.
Social conservatives are "one midterm election away from eventually overturning the Roe v. Wade decision," Staver told a conservative radio host, insisting there will be one or two Supreme Court vacancies before President Trump’s ends his first term in office, as Right Wing Watch reports.
If Christian conservatives get out and vote, Staver says, Republicans can hold the U.S. Senate, and fill the next Supreme Court vacancy with a far right wing justice.
That would mean, Staver says, "the abortion decision, the same-sex marriage decision, all of those things that went the wrong way will ultimately be in the balance to be reversed. So literally we are a few months away," he claimed, optimistically (audio below).
Hemant Mehta at Friendly Atheist weighs in.
"The stolen Supreme Court seat replaced conservative Antonin Scalia with conservative Neil Gorsuch, but the next appointment could tip the ideological balance of the Court for years or decades to come. Meanwhile appellate and district court nominations have been stacked with Federalist Society-approved candidates," he writes.
"No matter how many scandals Trump is embroiled in, this is why so many evangelicals cling by his side. They want their anti-gay, anti-abortion judges. Because Jesus taught us to ruin the lives of LGBTQ people and make women suffer."
Staver's time calculations may be off, but he's not entirely wrong. Should any of the liberal Supreme Court Justices, like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, or even Anthony Kennedy, retire, the religious right will ensure Trump nominates a far right wing extremist who will roll back civil rights for many Americans, especially women and LGBT people.
