"Trump’s negotiating style seems far from being this masterous strategic approach that he's often claimed it is," Fareed Zakaria said.

President Donald Trump has billed himself as the master deal maker, but when it comes to his actual negotiating skills, it seems there's much less there than it first appears.

As the administration's efforts to set up a summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un — a move the president has already suggested he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for — have begun to encounter difficulties, Trump's deal-making skills are really being put to the test. And in CNN host Fareed Zakaria's view, Trump has already made some basic mistakes.

"Trump’s negotiating style seems far from being this masterous strategic approach that he's often claimed it is," Zakaria told Anderson Cooper on "Anderson Cooper 360." "It seems somewhat impulsive."

He referred to the efforts thus far as "amateur hour at the White House."

By making such a big deal out of taking a meeting with Kim, Zakaria argues Trump has raised the stakes.

"He now has get a deal — and here's the killer: He needs a deal that is better than the Iran deal because he just rejected the Iran deal," he said. "Which means: No nuclear weapons, 98% of enriched uranium has to be shipped out or destroyed, plutonium pathway has to be completely dismantled. That's a very tough deal to get."
