«Noi, Paolo VI… dichiariamo, nel caso di infermità, che si presuma inguaribile, o di lunga durata… ovvero nel caso che altro grave e prolungato impedimento… di rinunciare» al «nostro ufficio». La lettera segretissima sulla quale sono state fatte molte ipotesi ma che nessuno aveva mai avuto tra le mani, è scritta con chiarissima grafia di Papa Montini. Porta la data del 2 maggio 1965 e dunque è stata vergata a mano dal Pontefice bresciano non quando era vecchio o malato, ma solo due anni dopo l’elezione, con il Concilio ancora aperto.
Rappresenta il gesto lungimirante di un Papa che vuole mettere al riparo la Chiesa da una sua lunga inabilità: una lettera di rinuncia anticipata, da consegnare al cardinale decano perché la renda nota agli altri porporati potendo dichiarare decaduto il Pontefice. È la novità più significativa del libro La barca di Paolo (San Paolo, pag. 240, 16 euro), curato dal Reggente della Casa pontificia, padre Leonardo Sapienza, autore di numerosi saggi con inediti del Papa bresciano.
