So I have a Toshiba Satelite L840 laptop that I bought in 2013 or something. The GPU died in 2015 (random black screen during gaming) so I send it to be repaired. The technician asked me whether I want to reball the GPU or just replace it (I don't know what either of this means) so I chose the cheaper one (reball). The laptop was ok for a few weeks but then the black screen happened again. I send the laptop to the technician again and this time I ask him to replace it (not sure what's being replaced tho but I think it's not the whole motherboard since it's not that expensive). The laptop was ok for 2-3 months and then black screen again.
Ever since then, I bought a PC and only use the laptop as a "movie player". The black screen crash still happened (sometimes it happened very quickly but sometimes my laptop can last for a whole movie). Note that, besides gaming and watching movie, the laptop also crash during web browsing. Fast forward to 2018, I decided to try to repair the laptop again so I can give it to my little sister for her to use Photoshop and some other graphic designing stuff. I send the laptop to another technician and told him about what happened.
After few round of tests, he concludes that it is indeed GPU problem. So I asked him to repair/change the GPU. However, he advices me to give up on it since he said there's a chance that the GPU will die again. He said something about once the chip/mobo was touched, it will fucked up the whole mobo or something. Is this true? I actually never heard anything about this.
For the record, problem with my laptop:
- Initially the screen only blackout when it's overheating/when playing games
- After initial repair, the laptop was fine for few months but the blackout happened again. But this time, it happened even on doing simple task like web browsing. The screen died eventhough the temperature was quite low (<60 celcius)
- I said "blackout" because the laptop didn't totally died. All the lights still on and sometime there's a sound. However, it is not responsive (e.g. the caplock light did not turn on/off when I press it)
